CHRIS LEVINE

Chris Levine is a light artist who works across many mediums in pursuit of a meditative experience through image and form. Levine is perhaps best known for producing what is already being described as one of the most iconic images of the twenty-first century: Lightness of Being. With light as its message, the sensational portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II presents an utterly fresh depiction of the most famous woman in the world. Using such media as LEDs, lasers, holography and natural light, Levine aims to tap into light's metaphysical nature and its properties as something intrinsic to human existence and perception. Collaborations with Massive Attack, Anonhi and Grace Jones have taken his experiential use of light as an art form to audiences outside the gallery context. Levine's laser installation set to Philip Glass was Glastonbury Festival's celebration of the life of David Bowie. Levine has recently completed a three-month career-defining exhibition at the prestigious Houghton Hall, breaking all paid attendance records. The exhibition consisted of light sculptures and photographic portraiture, and the primary showstopper was the 10-story tall steel sculpture weighing 6 tons with lasers beaming for miles over the English countryside. There are plans to take the exhibition to other historic institutions internationally. Levine has had solo exhibitions at a number of major institutions and galleries, including The Fine Art Society Contemporary, Asprey, and the Genesis Foundation Commission, London. Group shows and special exhibitions include Collectors Contemporary, Singapore; Annenberg Foundation, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Museum, Cardiff; National Portrait Gallery, London; National Gallery, Scotland; National Museum, Belfast; Swarovski Crystal Palace, Milan; The Royal Opera House and Saatchi Gallery, London; and Colette, Paris.
