The Portuguese artist Leonor Antunes (b. 1972 in Lisbon, lives in Berlin) is concerned with craftsmanship, the mutability of sculpture in space, and cultural history's blind spots. In extensive research, she investigates personalities from the worlds of design, architecture and modern art, and explores their language of form. Her work thereby starts from the measuring, haptic perception and exploration of the site. Hilde, shorter version 1 is a reminiscence of the German architect Hilde Weström (1912-2013) and a variation on a recent installation. Antunes adopts elements of a shelving system and renders the materials of steel and leather into a hanging, organic structure. The lines she thus creates can be perceived as a drawing in space or as a moving sculpture. Antunes' work is simultaneously homage and reinterpretation. The artist has exhibited internationally in prestigious museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco (2016), the New Museum, New York (2015), the Kunsthalle Basel (2013) and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2011). Most recently, she conceived a site-specific, immersive spatial installation for the Pirelli HangarBicocca exhibition space in Milan.
