Holton Rower (b. 1962), grandchild of Alexander Calder, is celebrated for his "pour paintings," in which he pours large amounts of paint onto plywood. "I probably use more paint than anybody in the history of art," says the artist. He thereby produces sculptural paintings, small- to large-scale wall reliefs, entirely without a brush. Some, as here, call to mind the annual growth rings of tree trunks. Through this experimental technique, Rower creates kaleidoscopic pictures, records of gravitational force and chance images. His visually spectacular works act like psychedelic explosions of color. "Color is a weapon i use to unlock love. Love is expanded awareness. Awareness brings more possibilities. Possibilities enable a larger array of action. Action is the cradle of all new things. We need new things as many of the old are making life terminate. Color is a key I use to indicate unutilized choice, which is where we need to go." Holton Rower has exhibited in numerous galleries in the U.S., as well as in prominent European galleries, including Galerie Maeght in Paris and Galeria Estudio Fuentes in Madrid. His work has also been shown in Aarau in Switzerland.
