Lotte Laserstein was one of the most important figurative painters of the Weimar Republic. As one of the first women to graduate with honours from the Berlin Academy in the 1920s, she developed a precise, naturalistic style that masterfully combines portraiture, psychological depth, and the modern type of the “New Woman.” Her works are considered highlights of the representational painting of her era. The oil painting presented here shows a quiet, nature-loving scene: a pond framed by trees, a narrow footbridge, soft light over a still surface of water. Laserstein combines clarity and melancholy to create a harmonious, atmospheric image of nature.
