Ersan Mondtag, born in Berlin in 1987, is considered one of the most idiosyncratic theatre and installation artists of his generation. His works combine visual opulence, performative elements, and an intense examination of migration, memory, and political history. He gained international recognition through his contributions to the Venice Biennale, where he designed the German Pavilion together with Yael Bartana in 2024.
This work depicts his grandfather Hasan Aygün, who worked as a guest worker in the asbestos processing industry in the 1960s. The portrait, engraved into a cement fiber board using a laser, appears as a subtle chiaroscuro modulation in the porous surface.
Part of the “Asbestos series”, it intertwines family history, material, and biography to create a haunting image of remembrance.
