Angela Bulloch (b. 1966 in Rainy River) is a
Canadian artist based in Berlin who likes to sound
out the dividing lines between geometry, illusion
and logic and whose works combine conceptual
rigour with aesthetics and humour. Her multi
disciplinary sculptures composed of cuboid elements
raise questions about societal systems, patterns
and rules and consistently challenge our own
powers of perception.
In recent years Bulloch has been creating works
that engage with vertically stacked geometrical
solids, which depending on the viewers’ perspective
change in appearance and invite viewer-work
interaction. The sculpture Viridian Hybrid, is a 2-m-
high stack of four blue-green polyhedra. Viridian
is the name of a blue-green pigment, which is taken
up again in the colour gradations of the faces
of each of the solids in the stack. These changing
shades, however, can be appreciated in their
entirety only by walking round this monumental
sculpture, which depending on the viewing angle
appears either two- or three-dimensional and
is constantly revealing a new aspect.
Bulloch’s conceptual and minimalist works have
made her a leading figure on the contemporary art
scene. The Musée d’Arts de Nantes recently
staged a wide-ranging exhibition of her work (2022).
