Published by Éditions Cahiers d’Art in collaboration with de Pury, The Gehry Houses is a groundbreaking art project by star architect Frank Gehry (b. 1929, Toronto). It is a homage to the Gehry Residence in Santa Monica – Gehry’s first private house, which in 1978 he transformed into an iconic manifesto of modern architecture.
Gehry radically remodelled the original 1920s bungalow, using unconventional materials such as corrugated sheet metal, plywood and chain-link fencing. This artistic transformation marked the beginning of his characteristic, disruptive architectural style and redefined the concept of home.
The Gehry Houses is a collector’s edition comprising a set of twelve houses. Each house captures a defining fragment of the Gehry Residence’s façades, whose many layers are characterised by dynamic geometries and impressive architectural tension. Crafted in wood, cardboard and mirror-finish paper, each house measures 27 × 33 × 8 cm and bears a brass plate stamped with Gehry’s signature. Contained inside one of the sculptural objects is a copy of the monograph Frank Gehry: The Masterpieces.
The complete set of twelve houses is available in a limited edition of eight and is presented in a bespoke shelving unit designed by Gehry.
The sculptural objects making up The Gehry Houses are more than mere models: they are a material homage to one of the most radical and influential voices in architecture, and a celebration of space, disruption and improvisation.
