Francesco Clemente (b. 1952, Naples) is best known for his portraits of the 1980s New York art scene. At the suggestion of gallery owner Bruno Bischofberger, in 1983 he painted and collaborated with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. His works have been exhibited in leading galleries (Leo Castelli Gallery, New York; Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich; Galerie Daniel Templon, Paris) and renowned museums (Centre Pompidou, Paris; Guggenheim Museum, New York and Bilbao; Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt).

Recently on view at LGDR in Hong Kong, Winter Flowers XXXIV belongs to a series of close-up flower paintings that Clemente first commenced in 2010. He was inspired to embark on the series after his wife, actress Alba Primiceri, brought some flowers picked one winter from the park to his New York studio. Clemente, who spends much time in India and is influenced by Hindu and Buddhist art, paints these blooms in a colourful, smooth and supple style, as familiar from Indian fabrics.
