The celebrated American artist (b. 1939) is known for his monumental sculptures and installations, which are located primarily in public buildings and outdoors. His works are characterised by their minimalist aesthetic and their ability to redefine spaces. Richard Serra expands the boundaries of his sculptures and invites the viewer to discover space in a new and unconventional way. But his works on paper are impressive, too. The artist works with large-format sheets and uses oil pastels, charcoal and ink in various dark shades. In order to introduce a third dimension, he bends, tears, folds and cuts the paper. This creates depth, and the projecting elements establish a physical presence that invites us to contemplate Serra’s powerful and expressive images from all different angles.

Serra has already been honoured with numerous awards and nominations. His works can be seen in museums and galleries around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Tate Modern in London, the Museum Wiesbaden and the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen.
