In GotaVida (2021), Ernesto Neto weaves a sensorial ecosystem where sight, smell, and bodily presence converge. Bay leaves nestled within a crocheted cocoon form a herbal microcosm, their aroma activating a participatory scenography that links viewers to the work as intimately as its braided components link to one another. The sculpture’s tensile, intricately entwined structure echoes ecological principles and the hidden architectures of the natural world, while its painstaking manual weaving reflects the unhurried rhythm of handmade craft. Through this fusion of material, scent, and spatial connection, the work embodies Neto’s ongoing exploration of communion between human and non-human life, positioning the artwork as an active interlocutor in space.
