Lily Son (b.1991 BFA School of the Art Institute of Chicago) is a painter based in Seoul best known for her eye-catching appropriation of 1990’s cartoon characters in her Childhood series and Feeling Diaries series which is an expressively auto- biographical body of works in which the artist offers insight into her most personal thoughts and experiences.
In Tweety (Childhood Series), there are a few images that catches the viewer’s eye.
The rainbow seems to forge a disturbing resemblance with the target below that seem to foreshadow the narrative below suggesting Tweety’s death which is only subtly portrayed. This witty interplay between seemingly resembling images with completely different meanings provokes an unsettling response from the viewer, inviting the viewer to question and ponder the associations between their initial response to a certain image and the actual somber meaning behind the bigger narrative.
Lily Son has held solo exhibitions at galleries such as Ruach Gallery, Adm Gallery and Art Space AT Seoul and has previously won the GAMMA Young Artist Competition “Young Artist of the Year Award” and was The Artist’s Magazine Competition “(First Prize) Winner.”
