The paintings, drawings and sculptures by US
artist George Condo (b. 1957) offer virtuoso explorations that are regularly inspired by forerunners
from art history. Strongly influenced by 17th-century Venetian and Dutch painting, Condo is known
for his unique visual language, which calls to mind
the aesthetic of Cubism, Surrealism and Pop.
Figures Lost in Time testifies above all to the artist’s multifaceted use of line and to the mysterious,
symbolic figures that have been appearing in his
works for more than four decades. The figures abstract distillations hold the pictorial space together and are rarely connected to one another by
eye contact or touch. The artist links them instead
through his complex matrix of lines and gestures.
George Condo’s works are shown in the most prestigious museums worldwide. The artist created the
2023 work on paper Figures Lost in Time especially
for the Fondation Beyeler’s Summer Night’s Gala.
