José Parlá’s work is an interpretation of the chaos and movement of metropolitan life. The artist paints swift fragments of city living in large scale multimedia works. Using paint, photography, video, and murals as mediums, Parlaaims to convey the degradation and renewal of urban environments. Abstract washes of deep color and radial strokes of paint are layered several times on canvases where glimpses of printed material peek through from below. He draws inspiration from music, calligraphy, dance, architecture, and advertisements in these works, and what results are pieces that capture a sense of transience and challenge ideas of identity and how we define an environment. His work has been exhibited in institutions around the globe like The SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, and The National Museum of Fine Arts, Cuba. The artist currently lives and works in New York city.
